Diary, 1863, belonging to Charles L. Lumsden, captain of Lumsden's Battery. Capt. Lumsden describes his travels through Va., Tenn., and Ga. in 1863. Most of the diary focuses on everyday camp life and includes discussions of sickness, Lumsden's social life with his family in Va., visiting other artillery batteries and officers, attending church, and supplies. Of special interest are Lumsden's meetings with Confederate Generals Stonewall Jackson and Braxton Bragg and his brief descriptions of the battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge in Tenn.

Charles L. Lumsden was originally from Petersburg, Va., attended the Virginia Military Institute, and then became a teacher at the Alabama Military Institute in Tuscaloosa, Ala. During the Civil War Lumsden became the Confederate captain of "Lumsden's Battery".
